Harry Potter and John Bosco

Yesterday I had my first class of the new semester, which is a three-hour weekly seminar. No, not spiritual matrices, but a comparative study on the theme of storytelling and spiritual formation. Terms of the comparison? Don Bosco and Harry Potter. Okay, okay, I know -- this is crazy, but I've been fascinated by the parallels in the storytelling process and content… and with all the work I'm doing on this sabbatical, I wanted a little fun too.

The class is small: 8 students which include two Africans, two Latin Americans, two Europeans, one Asian and one North American. Broken into languages, three are French-speaking, two are Spanish-speaking, two are English-speaking, and one is Italian. I've got copies of source material in all four languages so as to assist the students in getting into it.
